Who says Spring Break is just for students?

Yes that right I said Spring Break. The boy went to his dads Friday after school and I was out and about that night. I made this Spring Break one to remember. It started in Atlanta and then moved to Houston. That’s right HotPants is national…LOL (I know I’m silly, so what!)

Spring Break Atlanta

Friday I had plans to go see TI at the Tabernacle. A friend of mine scored tickets so he and I and his co worker and her boyfriend hooked up to go. We had drinks and appetizers at Ted’s since it was right there at the corner of the Tabernacle and then jumped in line an hour before the show. Yes, an hour because the show was free, it was hosted by V103 and well you know how we do when there’s something free out there. We will show up and show out! The show was actually pretty good. TI puts on a very good performance and it doesn’t help that his short lil fine self can get it any day of the week. Besides his performance, there was a talent show prior to the concert that gave some local talent a chance to shine. Three singers and a rap group. The rap duo almost took it; considering it was a rap concert, it was understandable. But this girl, this white girl (nothing racist to be implied but I’m just saying) came in and tore the walls down! This girl blew and had the crowd going crazy for her. Yeah, she won and I won’t be surprised to see her again at some point in the near future. Someone’s gonna market her.

Saturday was truly the highlight of Atlanta’s leg of Spring break. I actually planned my trip to Houston around this concert I had planned to attend. If you haven’t heard of Eric Roberson, you need to get up on him. The show opened with a group that I had never heard of, and unfortunately I think I forgot his exact name. I thought it was Dane Harris, but I can’t find him anywhere. Great artist though. Next up was Algebra Blessett. She’s so funky! The one song that has been getting a little airplay doesn’t really do her justice. But the highlight of the night, the man who still has me in tears weeks after the fact is Eric Roberson. Talk about under-rated, under-hyped, under-appreciated. Part of me hates that he gets NO AIRPLAY, but at the same time the radio seems to kill anything that is anything soul, and he is doing so well by name alone. I sat in front of him (and I do mean in front of him because we were so close to the stage that I literally could have reached out and touched him during the show) memorized the entire time he was singing. His performance is just amazing. His voice is beautiful. His stage presence is just it! Pictures to come very soon.

Sunday, ASB took it to the hood and kicked it at Club 29 in Decatur. It was…well it it hood. Not much more I can say than that. it’s not that I don’t know hood. I grew up in the hood. not the Atlanta hood, but the hood doesn’t change much based on location. But I have grown up and I can’t remember seeing or doing the things that girls are doing now. What we thought was “sex on the dance floor” when we were growing up, was G rated compared to these girls now. It’s sad and scary because this is what my boy is going to have to witness as he grows up. How do I as his mother teach him to not get caught up in “those kind of girls”.

Monday I pretty much just chilled. I went to dinner with a good friend of mine and then rested from the weekend. I did a little packing for my trip but not enough because I planned to do it Tuesday after work. That is until I got an email Tuesday morning telling me that BETJ was taping a few episodes of their Lyric Cafe show down at the Underground and Anthony David and Kindred and the Family Soul would be performing. Well I certainly couldn’t miss that! So I rearranged somethings and made myself available to attend that. Anther great experience. We missed Anthony David, but we saw Kindred, Tank, and Musiq, plus a ton of phenomenal poets.

Needless to say by the time I got to the airport Wednesday evening to fly to Houston I was pooped! I slept the whole flight there and am I glad that I did because I needed it when I stepped off the plane.

Next up…Spring Break Houston

Love is NOT enough

This is directed at everyone who loves someone but isn’t in love with them. Everyone who is unhappy in their current relationship but fear leaving their mate because they think they are obligated to stay because:

  • Their mate loves them
  • They have time invested
  • They have money invested
  • They are afraid of being alone
  • They don’t want to have to start over

You have to love yourself enough to be able to let yourself be happy. You can’t be happy when you are living out of obligation alone. You are not obligated to be miserable because of love. Love is not and will never be enough to sustain a relationship on its own. If you are unhappy and your mate has not or can not make the necessary changes to make you happy, what other reason is there to remain in the relationship. You can’t help who you fall in love with and there will be times when you have to recognize that and let go for your own sanity, piece of mind and overall happiness.

Too many people I love and care about fit this criteria. I love all of you and it pains me to watch you stay in these relationships. You deserve to be happy. Once you embrace that fact, you will be strong enough to do what you need to do, and all the rest will fall into place. I love you and I’m praying for your happiness.
